ReelFemme

Went to ReelFemme - Best of Herland Feminist Film Festival at FAVA curated by Collette Slevinsky. It was great - glad I went.

Showing were:

Breasts: What About Them?

Pink Card Club

The Wonderful World of Wau Wau

Lesbian National Parks and Services: A Force of Nature

The Package

I tried finding links but couldn't for most of the short films - too bad they don't have a web presence.

It was a nice evening with a full house and lucky me I won the door prize - a yummy looking Chilean cabernet sauvignon. Hopefully there was enough interest that a local feminist film festival will happen.

The best for last: I picked up a pamphlet for the herland In: Camera Workshop. It's a 10-day workshop in Calgary on video production skills. I would love to go. The deadline is January 5 and to apply I would have to submit a letter of intent, resume with relevant experience (though no prior experience is necessary) and a one-page concept for a 3-5 minute video.

So my mind hasn't stopped churning. I know that whatever I do it will probably not be a comedy (I am too serious for that and wouldn't be able to pull it off), it probably won't be sexual in nature. It will most likely be a documentary. Hmmm, here are some of the ideas that I am thinking of:

  • Music documentary like the one I did with Georgette Fry and Lisa Paterson. I would love to do it on Wildwood Flower but I am assuming it has to be filmed in Calgary so maybe Karin, Mike and Scott's band

  • Short film on women in bluegrass - I could hook up with FAMI. One cool thing about bluegrass is that all the women actually play an instrument - no Karaoke Queens and stage candy. Blast the hick stereotype. In other types of music the women often doesn't play an instrument.

  • Short film on a Buddhist teacher. It would be very interesting but I am not sure of Venerable Punnaji's availability. Or perhaps with Cecilie Kwiat.

  • Women in IT - day in the life of. Ten reasons to work in IT.

  • Blogging - communities, online journal, privacy, lots of women doing it

    Just a couple of ideas...

Underworld

underworld.gif We went to see Underworld last night at the movie cinema with M's cousin from Denver and his wife. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It's an action flick about vampires and werewolves with a strong female protagonist. Kind of like the Matrix effects and visuals meet Blade. There were enough twists in the plot to keep it interesting, the gory bits weren't too gory and the characters were believable and mostly well-played. There were though too many gunfire scenes which were gratuitous and monotonous. But I enjoyed it and would recommend it as a good escape for a couple of hours. I left the theatre speculating at what might happen in Underworld 2, which is probably a good sign.

Pretty Bird

Went to see the film "Bend It Like Beckham" it was a great movie. I highly recommend it. It's a good story, light, funny and a bit of a tear-jerker as well. Lifted my spirits.

Did I mention that it is spring and the birds have spring fever... they are so noisy it is driving us both a little crazy. The squeaks and squawks have been pretty much constant.

TGIF

Here are a couple of shows that I found out about today that I want to catch.
  • Hedwig and the Angry Inch is playing Live at the Roxy from April 1-20, 2003. It is a great movie and must be wild as a live show.
  • Also tickets go on sale tomorrow for LYLE LOVETT, JOHN HIATT, JOE ELY & GUY CLARK. Marshall can't make it so I will be going solo.
Marshall and I stayed home this evening and watched Bollywood Hollywood. The website is Flash media intensive but contains the trailer and song clips. It's a great musical romantic comedy about an East Indian family in Toronto. It was perfect for snuggling up on the couch and watching after an intense week: light and fun.

And just when I thought that the Alberta cowboy image was losing momentum. Guess it does make sense as an alternative to a gas-guzzling SUV.

Alberta man fighting horse riding ticket

Excerpt from Grande Prairie Herald-Tribune

"When the 22-year-old horse trainer returned home from an errand on Wednesday, three city enforcement officers were waiting for him in his driveway. Gill got a $50 ticket for violating Grande Prairie's animal control bylaw and told to stop riding in the city.

He admits he'd been warned before by both RCMP and enforcement services to stop riding in city limits. But in a town built on farming and ranching, Gill thinks there should still be room for horses.

'Horses are my mode of transportation and my occupation,' he said. 'It's my lifestyle and the City of Grande Prairie should be able to accommodate my lifestyle. '"
