Sorrento Advanced Bass Class Photo

It's cold here. Really cold. So I am starting to plan my summer vacations. Looks like August will be a blast. First Blueberry Bluegrass, then Edmonton Folk Fest, then we'll be going to Shady Grove and then to Sorrento (Week 2). If I can I think I'll take fiddle instead of bass this year.

Just noticed the Sorrento class photos are up. Click on the photos if you need a bigger view.

Here's my class:

And Marshall's:

His mandolin is the one without a sweet spot ;)

And here's the whole camp, I am in the upper right beside 24/7-jam-master Larry. Not sure where M is:

Sorrento BCBW - The Trip There

Now that my laptop is fixed I am finally getting around to uploading the Sorrento British Columbia Bluegrass Workshop (BCBW) Week 2 pics. This was our second year going to the workshop and again it did not disappoint. What a great time. A week of learning music, jamming, eating and drinking, day after wonderful day.

We left early on August 21st after having packed our gear into Zsa-Zsa (that is what I have named the wagon). We were concerned about the fires ravaging BC. Would the roads be open? Would Sorrento be closed?

Luckily the roads were open and we only got stopped once for about 30 minutes while they cleared the road of debris from a cliff. Sorrento Road Trip.wmv (800 KB) Download file

It was devastating seeing the countryside burnt up. The strange thing was on the right side of the road the mountainsides were covered with charred trees while on the left side everything was green. We passed quite a few homes that were destroyed near Kelowna. Last night I was talking to someone who's brother lives there - folks are starting to rebuild already.

Marshall insisted on driving all all the way there instead of taking turns (a macho streak I wasn't previously aware of?). We made great time and arrived a day earlier than planned. We called the motel at Sorrento to see if there was room for the night. There was so we unloaded our stuff and took a walk to explore and get some grub. The first person we saw was Augie jamming by the highway hanging out. He was staying at a campground until the next day when he could set up at the workshop site. We ate at a place called Home restaurant which had pretty good food.

s03_23.jpg

We walked off dinner by checking out the site and walking down to the beach. As we were walking back up to our cabin we could hear the student concert from BCBW week 1 - there was even an accordion. Obviously the bluegrass police were missing a little muscle this year. We ended up crashing, glad that we had finally arrived.

Laptop update: still not a word from Futureshop. I am hoping today is the day they get a chance to look at it.

J-bird sent me some photos from Sorrento.

Jamming at Sheila's place - it was the hot place to go to jam. I always gravitated there when I needed to swap a couple of tunes. From left to right: Kathleen, Sheila, Liz, Ted, me, Paul and the shy and quiet dobro player (I don't remember his name - sorry).

Sheila and Jeanette surprised me with birthday balloons and presents. The pin I am wearing is a howling coyote. Very cool.

As we were saying our goodbye's Jeanette wanted to take a non-musical picture so we all posed as surfers.

More pictures to come soon...

Back from Sorrento

Had a great time! Thank you everyone for the birthday emails, cards and phone messages. I spent my birthday drinking Sauvignon Blanc, eating chocolate and playing my heart out on the dawghouse bass with friends in the BC mountains. It was heavenly. Just wished you could have all been there! Maybe next year?

The only downer is that my laptop got sick the morning we left. It's in the shop being repaired - seems the registry file was corrupted which means a backup, restore of data and complete reinstall of operating system is necessary. Thank goodness I have an extended warranty. The waiting period is about 8 days until the technician can take a look at it, I hope they manage to do a good backup.

As soon as it comes back I will upload some pics and maybe a sound bite from our student concert.

I am off to make myself a cup of tea and read my new book "The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twentieth Annual Collection"

Sorrento Bound

We are off in the morning. The birds are at summer camp, we are set to go!

So far we have packed:

  • one dawghouse bass, one acoustic/electric bass, one mando, one acoustic guitar and one National guitar, extra strings, tuner etc.
  • mini-disc recorder and discs
  • food (one weeks worth for me in little frozen containers), canned fruit and powerbars, salsa and corn chips
  • Britta filter and some bottled water
  • Becks beer, Big Rock Cider, sauvignon blanc (couple of really nice bottles for my birthday celebration) and Baileys
  • clothes for every season
  • bedding and towels
  • jamming chairs
  • digital camera

Thank goodness we got the station wagon.

I am undecided on bringing the laptop. It was useful last year for burning cds. I won't have an internet connection so maybe I will leave it behind. I will see in the morning.

Can't wait to get there. The drive will probably be hellish, 12 hours in a car with lots of potential bickering with hubby, the threat of forest fires and road closings etc. But once we get there, it'll be heaven. All the jamming I can stand.

See you soon!
