Marshall Lawrence at Orlando's

Friday and Saturday night Marshall Lawrence and Crawdad played some acoustic blues at Orlando's III (6104-104 Street, Edmonton). Sounds like it was a great time. Looks like they will be playing there on New Year's Eve.

Canadian Blues Tragedy - The Twisters in Accident on Their Way to a Gig

The Twisters who are one of Canada's premiere jump swing blues band and 2003 Juno nominees were in an accident on their way to a gig this weekend - the limited news we have is that they were in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailor. News is sketchy at the moment but it appears that they were airlifted from the scene and that there might be casualties. I will update as soon as I hear more.

The Twisters were scheduled to play at the Blues On Whyte Commercial Hotel this coming week. Local musicians are getting together to play the gig for them to raise money for The Twisters and their families. Marshall Lawrence will be there this week to help. Blues On Whyte is located at 10329 Whyte Ave, Edmonton.

I don't know what else to say except I hope that everyone is OK and that the blues community rallies around the Twisters in their time of need.

UPDATE: James Taylor (JT) the Twisters dawghouse player passed away. Our thoughts are with the band and their families.

JT mentioned on Talk Bass.

B.B. King concert lowdown on the drive home...

Toby: From the moment I sat down in the newly renovated seats at the Northern Jubilee I wanted to leave.

Marshall: Me too - I wish you had said something - I was ready to leave after the third song.

Toby: Our seats weren't the best since the concert sold out so fast and we were in the first balcony. About where we sat the last time we saw B.B. King and it was fine then. But last time we weren't squished in like sardines - it was a close fit. I could have done without knee-jiggling boy beside me or the man who coughed behind me and I felt his cough-breath on my neck. Tooooo close for comfort for me.

Marshall: Yeah - the butt smells were killing me. The seats are packed soooo close together it was excruciating.... How close were they... well let me tell you ... you could smell the persons "butt smell" sitting next to you.... for real... now that's packing them in tight..... It'll have to be a special concert for me to go through that again... for sure...

Toby: B.B. was on - he's such a great performer. Smooth and makes everyone feel good. I just kept the binocs on him the whole time imagining that I wasn't sitting beside jiggling-knee boy. What did you think of the band?

Marshall: B.B. was great but the band was low energy... they could have supported him more and made the show rock... not sure what was up but I was very disappointed in the band... B.B. was great... so it was worth it... but the band needs a good spanking for sure....

Toby: His voice is amazing - still sounds as great as ever. Can't believe he's 80 - he still has the moves. And lots of good stories and schtick.

Marshall: I'm starving.

Toby: Don't make me drive through the creepy McDonalds drive-through. I am begging you.
(bickering ensues... but Marshall wins out in the end.)

Marshall: Chicken Select yum yum

To The Happy Couple

On Saturday we celebrated Lawrence and Nadia's wedding.

lawrencenadia.jpg

The ceremony was at the Muttart which is beautiful even in the fall with lots of flowers and gorgeous plants. The reception that evening was fun - a mix of Russians, Canadians and Chinese folks celebrating the happy couple. The food, vodka and company were excellent. I hope they have a wonderful life together.

Newsy Update

mountainash2005.jpg

Every year when fall rolls around my hibernating instincts kick in. There is lots to do like the concert Woodbend is playing tomorrow, the yoga I do every day, playing with Wildwood Flower, hanging out my wonderful and talented husband, learning new songs like One More Dollar (Gillian Welch), The Long Ride Home (Patty Griffin) and Rhonda Vincent's version of Jolene (which kicks) and my great new job where I am learning all about OLAP and data warehousing (which is very cool but demands that I look at data in a new light - call to my techy friends - if you ever want to go out for a drink and talk about it let me know - like I said it is very cool).

But even with all these wonderful things it seems that every October I just kind of 'fall' into a funk. The days are getting shorter and every morning when I drive to work while the sun is coming up I just wish I was in bed - and staying there all day.

Been checking out some fine Edmonton blogs, two of note include:
Digital Dream Machine: My favourite post so far is the Tortoise Walk.
Bill's Blog Crazy Ass Planet: I think I worked with him at TELUS when I was working on the alberta.com team. Small world, interesting blog.

On the home front, Marshall has set up some dates to go into the studio and continue recording his CD. John Wilds wherever you are you are greatly missed. Another wonderful person that I miss is Deana Dufresne. I can't believe it has been a year since she passed. I guess that was just a gentle reminder to not take anything or anyone in your life for granted. Cause you never know.

Oh and I recently got an amazing gift in the mail. Matante Lyne who is so thoughful and a great keeper of traditions sent me some seeds from my Great-Grandmother. Carol called them Heirloom Seeds which is a great name. I can't wait to plant them in the spring and see them blooming in my backyard. That's only what? About 6 months away.

Computers, handguns and tequila

A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history - with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila.
