Cap'n Franky

My (not so little anymore) cousin Franky AKA Cap'n Franky is working up at Lake Maligne this summer. I haven't seen him for a long time - maybe we'll get a chance to see each other while he's on this side of Canada. Here is his blog:

Frix

Met up with Ron Graham on Friday for our traditional monthly Friday after work get together at Chances Restaurant for a glass of Geyser Peak and some delicious beef skewers. This week we had lots to catch up on so we ended up having a couple glasses of wine and trying the beet and goat cheese with dill appetizer (pictured). Despite our skepticism it was very good. Here's to good friends.

The perfect gig bag

I finally found the perfect gig bag.

gigbag.jpg

It was tricky because I need to carry a mic stand and the bags that I was trying were either too short or hockey bag huge. But I went to Sportchek with an open mind and a mic stand in hand and snooped around. I came across the perfect solution - a tennis racket bag. It's perfect and comfortable so I can sling it across my shoulder and still have both hands free to carry my bass.

What's in my gig bag?

  • 1 mic stand for vocals
  • 2 SM58 mics (1 for vocals and one wrapped in acoustic foam to stick in the tailpiece of my bass if I don't want to setup my DI)
  • 1 K&K Bass Master Pro preamp
  • 1 DI
  • 2 mic cables
  • 2 instrument cables
  • 1 Intellitouch tuner
  • 1 binder with lyrics and charts
  • small bag with toothbrush, aspirin, mints, finger tape, bandages, lipstick, batteries, talcum powder (for sweaty hands on hot summer days) etc.
  • small hand towel to wipe my bass

ACL

Looks like I have an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in my left knee and maybe a meniscus tear as well. Good one heh! No exciting story - I was rushing around setting up my gear on stage and stood up too fast at a funny angle and pop. I have trouble straightening my leg, tenderness, swelling and my knee feels locked. I have been hobbling around for the last week and it's getting much better but still feels quite unstable. Seeing my chiropractor was very helpful - I felt like my knee was finally back in place - what a relief! Tonight I am going to get a massage - hopefully that will increase the blood flow and help with the healing. And I left a message at the yoga studio that I go to. I am hoping one of the teachers can help me with a yoga rehab plan. Other than that lots of ice and ibuprofin.

I am going back to see the orthopedic surgeon later in May to decide if I want to have an operation to fix it or not. While I don't want an unstable knee and the chance for reinjury for the rest of my life, I am also not sure about having surgery. Lots to think about.
